Kitesurfing is a sport that uses the power of the wind to drive the rider over the water on a miniature surfboard or a kiteboard, which is similar to a standard wakeboard. Although the name implies surfing is involved, kitesurfing does not require waves; the wind is the only force required to propel you forward. Pretty cool!
A kite flies as a result of the forces applied to it, according to Newton’s laws of motion. Because a kite is heavier than air, it requires wind velocity to generate the aerodynamic forces of lift and drag. Drag is caused by the movement of the air flowing past the kite, whereas lift is caused by movement perpendicular to the wind.
The interaction of these forces is what allows the kite to fly in the air. The length of the line affects the lift-to-drag ratio and the kite’s stability. So, the more line that is released, the more drag is created.
To launch a kite, you must generate a lift force larger than the kite’s overall weight. The lifting force of a kite is generated by the downward deflection of air; the change in momentum of the kite provides an upward force because the air passing over the top of the kite is quicker than the air flowing underneath.
Once you’ve managed to launch your kite, it should remain at an altitude where all of the forces are balanced. If you pull on the kite’s line, you can increase the kite’s velocity and consequently its lift. This gives you the ability to alter the position of the kite to increase or reduce your speed during kitesurfing.
Is kite surfing dangerous?
This question doesn’t have one straightforward answer- just like all sports, kitesurfing comes with its own risks. Kiteboarding appears to be a pretty safe sport, with seven injuries per 1,000 hours of physical activity, especially when compared to popular sports.
To put it into perspective, American football has an average of 36 injuries per 1,000 hours of play, and regular football appears to even be riskier, with 19 injuries per 1,000 hours of play.
However, you can avoid dangerous situations by taking the correct precautions and practicing regularly. Here are a few essential things you should consider before you plan on going kitesurfing:
- You must be an able and confident swimmer. If you fall off your board while kitesurfing, it’s likely that you could become submerged underwater for a few seconds, so you’ll need to know how to stay calm and react appropriately in these situations.
- You must have consideration for others. This includes both other riders as well as visitors on the beach. You’ll need to remember that you’re not the only person enjoying the beach and to respect others and treat them how you would like to be treated. This also helps to lessen the chances of accident or injury.
- You must remain patient when learning. You’re not going to become an expert overnight, being a good kite surfer takes practice, and it’s so rewarding when you start to get good at it. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time for long sessions and remember that you only get out what you put into it.

At what age can you start kitesurfing?
The answer to this question will all depend on your specific situation. Many surf schools offer courses for children from the age of 6, so if this is something you can afford to do, it will give your child the best start in their kitesurfing journey.

Who invented kite surfing?
Depending on who you ask, the origin story of kiteboarding will differ slightly. The Chinese, for example, are said to have used kites for propulsion as early as the 13th century. George Pocock utilised kites to drive carts on land and ships on the sea in the 1800s, employing a 4-line control system similar to what we use today.
The origin of kitesurfing as we know it today dates back to just 1977. A man called Gijsbertus Adrianus Panhuise from the Netherlands patented the sport.
But It wasn’t until the late 1970s and early 1980s that two brothers from France’s Atlantic coast, Bruno and Dominique Legaignoux, invented kites for kitesurfing. In November 1984, they invented an inflatable kite design, which has since been adopted by other manufacturers to produce their own products.
In 1997, the Legaignoux brothers collaborated with Neil Pryde to develop a limited number of kites, which they then sold under the Wipika brand. These kites had premade inflatable tubes and a simple bridle system, which considerably improved their ability to re-launch from the water.
Then, in 1998, Lou Wainman appeared in Hawaii, not only staying upwind but also performing maneuvers that would take the kiteboarding industry years to completely grasp. While it began as an extreme sport, kite surfing has evolved into a relatively safe activity that is only growing in popularity as time goes on.
